Paul was a McDonald's All-American in high school. He attended Wake Forest University for just two years of college basketball where he assisted the Demon Deacons obtain their first ever number one standing. He had been elected 4th all round on the 2005 NBA draft by the New Orleans Hornets and traded into the Clippers in 2011.
On December 8, 2011, the Hornets agreed to a three-team trade sending Paul on the Los Angeles Lakers. The NBA, which owned the team during the time, nullified the offer, with commissioner David Stern claiming New Orleans would be better off keeping Paul.The teams taking part in the trade tried out to negotiate the league to change its ruling and reconstruct the deal does not help.On December 12, the Hornets decided to a trade sending Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers, even so the deal broke down once the NBA added additional demands for the authentic terms. Two days later, the teams finally made the trade, transferring Paul and two future 2nd round draft picks to the Clippers for Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu, plus the Minnesota Timberwolves' unprotected first round pick in the 2012 draft. Upon the deal's completion, Paul announced that he could opt to the final season of his agreement and remain for Los Angeles for about two more years.
